Bioware reveals Star Wars: The Old Republic F2P restrictions
There's no such thing as a free lightsaber
Star Wars: The Old Republic is going free-to-play later this year, and Bioware has now revealed what restrictions will be placed upon those who choose to forego subscription.
All of the MMORPG’s story content will be free, but PvE Flashpoint runs, Space Missions, and PvP Warzone battles will be limited to three plays per week. You’ll be able to purchase weekly passes for unlimited access. Restrictions will also apply to Cargo Bay and Inventory storage, which can be removed using the new Cartel Coins currency.
Operations will be unavailable in the free package, and even when unlocked with a weekly pass the majority of purple items will be unequipable.
Subscription owners will get priority in login queues, a reduced Quick Travel cooldown, and the ability to use the Emergency Fleet Pass to instantly return to their faction’s space station. Unpaid players will only get a single Crew Skill slot, and your Field Revivals will also be limited.
The release of the free-to-play option is still listed as “later this fall,” when Bioware will be hoping for a turnaround in popularity following subscription numbers that have fallen steadily throughout the year. Those still paying to explore a galaxy far, far away can continue to play as normal.
