Destroy All Humans!: Big Willy Unleashed (Wii)

Destroy All Humans!: Big Willy Unleashed review (WII)

Reviewed on April 01, 2008

It’s hard, sometimes. Exterminating the human race, I mean. Wiping out random people can be a fun, fulfilling pastime, but there are just so many ways to do it. High voltage electrocution, laser beams, fiery explosions, zombie outbreaks… technology provides so many different possibilities. It can be tough choosing the most satisfying method of slaughter, especially if you’ve got a good imagination. Actually killing a person, however, is easy; the bodies are ridiculously fragile. The real ...

Spitfire Heroes: Tales of the Royal Air Force review (DS)

It’s a shame. This game reeks of wasted potential. While the World War II setting is certainly appealing, being forced to take down the Germans with a single plane isn’t. There could have been so much more here – tactical bombings, NPC allies, you name it – but you’ve just got some wings, a couple of machine guns, and a prayer.

The World Ends with You review (DS)

It’s hot out today. The sun is baking the pavement, turning the downtown asphalt into a stove. That doesn’t deter the people, however. The Shibuya shopping district is never slowed down by weather. Hundreds of sightseers are lounging in their chairs, wolfing down their fast food as they plan their next stop. Children and parents wander up and down the streets, gazing longingly into the store windows they pass. Others are meandering through the crowd, lost in whatever thoughts or problems they mi...

They’re cute, aren’t they? The characters in Pretty Cure, I mean. Actually, they’re too cute; they cross that line that separates being adorable and downright irritating. One of them acts as a tomboy (whose costume, ironically enough, sports a ridiculous amount of frills and hearts), another is a brilliant and clumsy second fiddle, and the third is some pink-laden child with disturbingly long hair. They are a group of high school girls that can use their cell phones to transform in...

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin review (DS)

You get used to it eventually. The smell, I mean. The stench of decaying bodies and burnt flesh. It’s especially bad during the day; as the heat rises off the ground, it makes everything rot so much faster. You can’t avoid it, either. There will always be corpses, no matter where you look. Millions of them, piled high in these ruined cities. Most of them don’t even look human anymore; just maggot-ridden bags of meat with their eyes eaten out and their bones exposed. If you accidentally step on o...

Meet Travis Touchdown. Things aren’t going very well for him at the moment. He’s living in a pathetic hole of a room at the No More Heroes Motel. He’s practically broke, but you wouldn’t be able to tell. His home is crammed with anime posters, miniature figurines (including a human-sized Gundam in his living room), an entire collection of luchador masks, and his cat, Jeane. He spends his days watching old films of anime or pro wrestling matches. He rents porn from the local video store, makes il...

Contra 4 review (DS)

Heroes aren't what they used to be. There haven't been any good, mind-blowingly badass characters in years. Sure, there's the occasional exception like Solid Snake, but the vast majority of today's protagonists are either a bunch of generic gunmen clad in fancy armored suits or whiny, self-absorbed, spiky-haired teenagers. So we get better stories and understand these new characters' perspectives and motivations. That doesn't necessarily make a good game. What happened to guys like Mike Haggar,...

It’s just another boring day at the office. As a mass murderer and leader of the international black market, Rugal doesn’t really have the time or patience for conventional fun. When he’s not busy slaughtering innocent people or conducting illegal operations, his life is pretty dull. His only real hobby is collecting trophies. Of course, they’re not the kind of brass cups and miniature figurines that you might think of. His trophies are the cast-ironed carcasses of all the fighters he’s killed i...

Tsumi to Batsu: Hoshi no Keishousha review (N64)

Saki’s having a bad day. Well, worse than usual. His morning started with a shootout. Nothing too serious; Saki is one Hell of a gunslinger, and these Armed Volunteer goons can be taken out with a few bullet sprays. He must have murdered dozens – no, hundreds - of those armored warriors. But it’s getting old. You’d think that the government would take a hint and cut their casualties, but they keep sending wave after wave of these guys. It’s not like you can really blame them, though; Achi...

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams review (WII)

Hey. You awake? Don’t be so sure. How do you know? You could be slumped in your chair, drenching your keyboard in drool. Maybe the morning sunlight is creeping through the nearest window. It’s not like that would wake you up, anyway. You’re too far-gone to see it. You’re wandering through that strange and mysterious place called your subconscious, where reality and thoughts blend to create the most surreal visions of your imagination. It can be beautiful, awe-inspiring, and frightening all at on...

The King of Fighters XI review (PS2)

Power. That’s all it’s really about, isn’t it? Never mind the wealth. Forget the glory. The King of Fighters tournaments have and always will be a struggle for power. Some want it for good. Others want it for evil. Then there are guys like Ash Crimson. He’s out to steal the mystical flames of Kusanagi and Yagami Clans. Now that the tournament is starting up again, he’s got his sights set on Kyo and Iori, the wielders of the powers he’s after. It’s not like he’s an utterly depraved villain...

Meet Goodman. Nobody really cares about him. In a world where Geese Howard and Rugal Bernstein – you know, real fighting game bosses – dominate the playing field, this fellow comes up short. He looks like a cheap Igniz knockoff, wields a fiery whip, and controls a purple ball of flame shaped like a baboon’s head. Ooh, fearsome. His design practically screams, “I’m a throwaway villain! Beware my generic scheming!” If he weren’t poised to take control of the SNK universe, he’d hardly...

The party’s over, folks. Evil aliens are about to blow up the planet. There’s nothing we can do; the forces at work here are beyond the likes of you and I. How are you going to spend your last few moments of your existence? Are you going to call your loved ones? How about a pointless looting spree? If you’re going to die, you might as well go out with a smile, right? Or maybe you’re going to collapse where you stand, shedding buckets of tears and begging whichever God you worship for salvation. ...

Ghost Squad review (WII)

It’s quiet. Too quiet. You can hear the water lapping against the lakeshore, and a lone cricket greeting the evening. The sun is setting behind a wall of pine trees. Faced with such serenity, you could almost forget that the place is infested with terrorists. Somewhere inside this lakeside villa, they’re holding the President and others hostage. There will be no negotiations involved here; you’re armed with pistols, rifles, and God knows what else, and you’re going to use every last one of them....

Geometry Wars: Galaxies review (WII)

This is it. Hordes of enemies are closing in on you from every direction. You can’t get out of here alive. Don’t look so sad; you’ve fought well. Your exploits will be forever immortalized on the Leaderboard. How many times have you cheated death in these past few minutes? How many of the enemy forces have you slaughtered for your nameless cause? The only death toll you’ll ever know is the high score ranking at the corner of the screen. It’s not like that matters now, anyway. You can’t keep this...

Get up. Come on, this isn’t the time to be lazy. You think mastering the Boxing game on Wii Sports gives you the right to start slacking off? You think you’re ready for this fight, don’t you? See that guy across the ring? That’s no Mii character. That’s Ichiro Miyata, and he will crush your face in if you don’t defend yourself. There are even stronger opponents waiting for their chance as well. You nervous? You should be. To be honest, you don’t have much of a chance here. Maybe yo...

Super Mario Galaxy review (WII)

Reviewed on November 14, 2007

Why are you interested in the Wii? Come on, be honest. It isn’t the graphics. It can’t be just the price. Don’t tell me it’s just because of the newfangled control scheme. It’s about the games, and you know it. There hasn’t been much of a reason to get a Wii in the last few months. Sure, there has been a handful of quality titles added to its library (Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption head up that list), but there haven’t been any truly amazing, awe-i...

Meet Daniel Lamb. He’s crazy. Insane. Not playing with a full deck. Loco en la cabeza. But hey, can you blame him? He’s been locked up in a corrupt mental institution for God knows how long. Between all the beatings, shocks, and serums, how could anyone not go nuts? However, such things are the least of Danny’s worries; he’s suffering from amnesia as well. It’s not all bad, though. Thanks to a breach in security, he and his pal Leo have escaped. With his memories resurfacing sporadically,...

Bleach: Shattered Blade review (WII)

Reviewed on October 18, 2007

Bleach. What a name. Upon hearing it, one might assume that this incredibly popular anime is about doing laundry. There have been stranger concepts, after all. There are no washing machines or fabric softener here. Bleach is all about three things: swords, souls, and kicking ass. It follows the saga of Ichigo, a student who accidentally acquired the abilities of the Grim Reaper. The rest of the series basically involves him traveling between his world and the Soul Society (aka the...

Heaven or Hell? What’s it going to be, pal? You’ve got thirty seconds to choose. You going to go the good-natured paladin, or are you going to go with that flame-spouting anti-hero? How about the woman with the sentient hair? No? What about that aristocratic vampire? Not your style, eh? How about the swashbuckling womanizer, or the prepubescent pirate girl that’s pining after him? That veiled assassin with the pool cue looks like fun, too. Look at that ten-foot monster draped in a doctors coat, ...
